What the Heck is Fascia?

You may have noticed the word “fascia” popping up all over your feeds over the last few years…and for good reason, it’s super important!

Fascia is sort of like plastic wrap that covers almost every inch of your body. Made up of a dense network of collagen fibers, fascia surrounds and penetrates your muscles, organs, and nerves, essentially holding us together.

Of course, sometimes holding it all together can take its toll. Postural compensation patterns, injury, and overtraining can cause our body’s fascia to become sore and restricted. Sometimes little tears in the fascia don’t heal properly and adhesions develop (hello knots!). If this connective tissue surrounding the muscle becomes restricted, you’ll notice your muscles will also become restricted in their movement.

Now myofascial release describes what happens when you apply pressure to the affected areas to eliminate adhesions and release tension, ultimately improving movement and restoring the body back to its natural state

And guess what? Massage is a great way to release these fascial restrictions! Benefits of myofascial release through massage include:

  • Improves muscle function and posture
  • Increases flexibility and joint range of motion
  • Relieves muscle soreness and joint stress
  • Improves blood and lymphatic circulation
